It’s now officially summer...which means your pets are probably cooling off a lot more inside. But having the dogs in the house is no reason to fear being able to have in-door plants!

We’ve rounded up some tips and tricks for having your four-legged friends around your plant friends during the dog days of summer.

1.These five plants are safe around pets:

3. If you’re worried about your dogs in your outdoor beds, consider mulching your plant beds with less inviting materials. 

Some pet owners suggest scattering clippings from thorny or prickly bushes, such as rose stems, barberry or juniper trimmings. Your dog will not like the way these poke the soft pads on their paws when they try to enter the garden.

4. Make a dog deterrent spray! Some household items with strong scents that deter dogs are:

• Coffee grounds

• Orange peels

• Crushed red pepper

• Black pepper

• Cayenne pepper

• Ground mustard

5. Save cardboard frozen pizza circles and/or plastic coffee can lids to protect indoor plant soil from dogs who like to dig.

You can cut holes in them and push them over the crown and stems of your houseplants! Simply push the cardboard or plastic circles down to the soil level so there’s no bare soil to attract your curious pups.
