How to Plant A Cactus: Plant Tip Tuesday

Can you feel that? The heat of summer is undoubtedly HERE (although it isn’t officially summer till next week) and we’re focused on hot weather plant tips.

Even though parts of our home state of North Carolina are classified as a temperate rain forest (!!!) we clearly LOVE plants that are more accustomed to dry weather…and that has us thinking about all things CACTUS.

If you’re also thinking about how to plant a cactus this year…read ahead for everything you need to know.

How to Plant a Cactus Outside

  • The biggest things to focus on when planting a cactus outside are well-draining soil and lots of sunlight. Especially in our area, which is prone to frequent summer rain showers, soil that helps to protect against both over and under watering is paramount. Check out this Miracle-Gro Garden Soil.

  • Next, dig a hole about double the size of the pot the cactus is currently living in, and about half as deep.

  • Feel free to ask the shopkeep (if you’re buying with us- you can email us, too!) when you purchase your cactus, but generally waiting 2-3 weeks before watering will let the roots set. From then on out, water when the top 3 inches of soil are dry.

How to Plant a Cactus Inside

  • Potting a cactus is easy- but the biggest mistake people make is getting a pot that’s too big. Cactus’ grow very, very slowly…so you’ll only need a pot large enough to contain the plant as it is. when you plant it.

  • Just like with planting outdoors, waiting a couple weeks before watering is advised, and then only when the top 3 inches are dry.

  • Grow indoor cactus plants near a south- or west-facing window so they get as much sunlight as possible, and you can also move them outside (during the summer) for more light!

  • Start their outside stay in a protected spot and let them get used to being outside, then move them to an area with more sun. Morning sun is best if you’re planning to move plants between indoors and out.
