Common Mistakes New Plant Parents Make
Hey y’all! Happy #PlantTipTuesday.
Many of you that visit our shops are newbie plant parents (yay!!) but just like giving birth to a human baby for the first time….being a plant parent comes with its own learning curves.
Here are a few Common Mistakes New Plant Parents Make…
Awareness of LIGHT
The light in your home will shift from hour to hour and season to season. It’s safe to say that most plants prefer bright, in-direct light and that if they’re tucked into a corner somewhere…they’re not going to thrive.
Maintenance levels
Are you buying a plant because it’s really pretty, or because you know that you can actually maintain what it needs to survive? It’s a common mistake for new plant parents to not be totally clear about the upkeep a plant requires. Make sure you’re shopping for something that fits in with your lifestyle.
Repotting with the wrong soil/too quickly
Like people, plants get very comfortable in their homes. When you bring a new plant home, it’s important to not rush it into a new container with different soil. If you have a cute vessle you’re excited to use, simply set the plant inside it without repotting quite yet. Plants like to acclimate to new environments just like we do…so take your time before moving its roots.
DRAINAGE
Every plant- and let us repeat, EVERY plant, needs drainage. There are many different ways to provide it….just make sure you do. New plant parents also often overwater because they’re excited to nurture the new life, but if there’s nowhere for that excess water to go, you can literally kill the plant with hopeful kindness. Make sure your pot has a drainage hole, or add some stones to the bottom to help encourage the drainage process.
Have you made any of these common mistakes by new plant parents? We hope this little cheat-sheet will help you avoid them in the future :-)
