Healthy Edible Plants That You Can Grow Indoors

The idea of growing fresh food at home may sound too good to be true, or in the least, a bit daunting.

But never fear! Whether you live in a house, apartment, condo…or even a van (hey, it’s 2020!) with a little love and care these healthy edible plants will thrive wherever you call home sweet home.

  • Orange and Lemon Trees

How cute would it be to grow baby mandarin oranges AT HOME! If you have ample sunlight and an extra large pot…that dream can be a reality. Just like lemon trees, allow the soil to thoroughly dry between waterings and make sure to harvest the oranges as soon as they turn, well, orange, for the best flavor possible!

The only caveat with these guys is the sunlight requirement. 8 to 12 hours of sunlight is required and ideally, a relatively humid environment. If you live in North Carolina where we’re located, that should be no problem!

  • Basil Plant

Can you say natural air freshener? Basil is super fragrant and grown indoors (ideally in your kitchen for ease of use) it’s that much easier to just grab a bunch off and top off your favorite recipe. Pizza, anyone? Typically these are grown outdoors…but it can definitely be done inside. Just be sure to use nutrient rich soil and use a well-draining pot. Keep the soil somewhat moist at all times, but not soggy!

  • Avocado Plant

Who doesn’t love avocado? Most people love them, but most don’t know how simple it is to grow them indoors! Remove the pit of an avocado and rinse it off well. Stick three or four toothpicks to the base of the pit and suspend it in a glass of water with the pointed toothpick side up. Then, place it in a warm area (a windowsill with lots of sun works great).

In a few weeks, you should have a brand new baby tree that is ready to be planted! Place the rooted seed in a pot and leave it in a sunny place. It should be watered frequently, but lightly.
