Indoor Plants vs. Air Quality: What’s the Real Deal

Welcome back to this week’s blog! Today, we’re diving into the topic of indoor plants and their impact on air quality in your home. If you’ve ever heard that plants can significantly purify the air, you might be in for a bit of a reality check—but don’t worry, I’m here to break it down for you.

Do Plants Actually Clean the Air?

Having plants indoors comes with a ton of benefits. They reduce stress, add a slight humidity boost, and make your space feel more alive. But when it comes to improving air quality? The truth is, they don’t do as much as you might think.

A common misconception is that a few houseplants can act as natural air filters. This idea came from a NASA study, which showed that plants can remove certain toxins in sealed, highly controlled environments (think: a small, airtight space, not your living room). In a real-world home? You’d need dozens, if not hundreds, of plants densely packed into a room to see a noticeable difference.

So yes, plants are great, but they’re not a substitute for actual air filtration.

How to Really Improve Air Quality at Home

If you’re serious about fresher air, here’s what actually works:

  • Invest in a HEPA air purifier – These trap dust, pet dander, allergens, and airborne particles way better than any plant can.

  • Clean regularly – Dust and vacuum often, wash pet beds and toys, and fluff out pillows and couches to keep allergens at bay.

  • Groom your pets – Regular brushing helps control dander (and keeps your furry friend looking fresh).

  • Open your windows – Let in fresh air regularly to reduce indoor pollutants.

  • Switch to beeswax candles – Unlike paraffin candles, beeswax candles produce negative ions that can help neutralize pollutants in the air.

  • Use activated carbon filters – These can absorb odors, chemicals, and VOCs at a cheaper upfront cost than an air purifier.

Plants Are Still Worth It!

I know, I know—it’s a bummer that plants aren’t air-cleaning superheroes. But they still add to your quality of life! They bring beauty, relaxation, and a touch of nature indoors, which is just as important. So go ahead and fill your space with greenery, just don’t expect them to replace your air filter.
