#PlantTipTuesday: DIY Containers To Propagate Your Houseplants
If you know anything about plants, or are excited to learn, you will be familiar with the term “propagation.” This simply means “to grow new plants” and it’s typically by way of the original!
Some plants are super easy to propagate- you simply put a stem cutting in water. But other types of cuttings rot in water because they need a more controlled environment.
That’s when a propagation box comes to the rescue! And, they don’t have to be expensive. You can Google and find plenty of options to choose from, but around here…we love a DIY moment :-)
Here’s how to make your own propagation box:
This DIY will be free for many of us who have these supplies already at home. Otherwise- it will still be fairly inexpensive! All you’ll need is:
Water
Drill (if needed for making holes in the lid)
Once you have all your supplies gathered, add a 3-4 inch layer of seed starting mix to the bottom of the container. Note that the size of the container doesn’t matter too much, just be mindful of the size of your cuttings.
Next, wet down the rooting mix. You want it to be moist, but not floating or soggy.
Make a little hole with your finger and place in your cutting. Lightly press the soil around the clippings so they stay in place. Ensure the soil is touching the stem.
Put the lid on the box (after drilling a few holes if there aren’t any already) and place it in an area it will receive lots of natural light!
It’s really that simple to make your own mini-greenhouse that will have your plant cuttings growing in no time. Have you propagated plants before, or will you be trying soon? Tag us on Instagram @TheZenSucculent and keep us updated on their progress!
