#PlantTipTuesday: How to Care for Vining Plants

Climbing vines grown indoors will need to be clipped back occasionally. They will grow absolutely wildly if not restrained! With that said, here’s this week’s #PlantTipTuesday: The Zen Succulent’s Top Tips for Vining Plants.

Tip #1: Pruning is best done in the spring before new growth begins.

If your vining plant Is a really rapid grower, you may need to prune again in the fall. Prune just above a node.

When you prune:

  • Cut to healthy wood if removing dead or damaged growth.

  • Cut to a bud or stem that is pointing in the direction you want the vine to go.

  • Cut cleanly and don't leave a stub! That’s an invitation to bugs and disease.

Tip #2: Indoor vines need something to climb on, or they be planted in a hanging pot.

You can then train the vines over doors and around windows, or allow them to trail along bookcases, or cascade down a wall.

Tip #3: Watering needs to be monitored very carefully.

The most common killer of houseplants is overwatering! Wait, wait, WAIT until the soil is totally dry before watering. And remember that plants need less water in the winter. Ideally, water the vine in the morning.

Tip #4: Fertilize regularly.

Fertilize vines during spring and summer. The needs of plants vary widely though, so the best way to determine the needs of your specific vining plant is to start slowly. Just like with water, too much fertilizer can damage the plant.

Tip #5: You may need to occasionally repot the vining plant.

Go up two pot sizes and transplant in the spring to keep your indoor climbing vine healthy and vigorous!
