5 Plants for Your College Dorm Room

More than plants, we have lots of goodies for you dorm - from candles to artwork - to keep you ZEN this school year.

Looking for a little greenery to spruce up your new home away from home? Look no further, ZEN has got you covered.

If Your Dorm Room Doesn't Get Much Natural Light

Try a heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron cordatum). They come in a variety of colors and can be kept as bushy plants or trailing from a shelf or loft.

Heartleaf philodendrons don’t tolerate direct sunlight, making them perfect for a room with a north facing window.  Keep their soil stay moist by watering them once a week.  They also appreciate the occasional misting, though not required.

The perfect lil’ buddy to cozy up any space.

If Your Dorm Room Gets Good Natural Light

Try a cactus. Cacti species come from sunny, dry regions of the Americas, so really all they want is lots of sun. They require very little attention, only needing water once a month.  Perfect for a window sill in an east or south facing window.

So cute, why not get several!?

If You Don't Know What Kind of Light Your Dorm Room Gets

Try a ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamifolia). Rich in shades of green, this plant does well in low to medium light, perfect for any dorm room. To keep them happy, water every two weeks.

A ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamifolia) can add a pop of color and texture to any space.

If You Want A Fun Conversation Plant for Your Dorm Room

Try a terrarium. Terrariums are a great way to create a mini landscape right in your room.  They are also super easy to care for, requiring just a few tablespoons of water a week.  Be advised: terrariums do require adequate light, so a room with an east, south or west facing window is best.

You can make a terrarium at our DIY terrarium bar - a fun activity for a date night or getting to know your new roommate.

If You Have A Record of Killing Plants

Try an air plant.  Air plants are easy to care for, and since they have no roots, one less part of the plant to potentially kill.  Airplants also do well in low light, just be sure to mist them once a week when dry.

We have loads of fun accessories for air plants, such as stands, dishes and cups. Stop by the store to pick some out.

ZEN Bonus: If You Have a Smelly Roommate

Try a snake plant (Sansevieria sp.).  They are virtually indestructible plants that can be neglected for weeks at a time and still look healthy.  Additionally, they can survive low light levels.  The best part, though? They are one of the best air filtering plants you can buy. Perfect for those with a less-than-pleasant smelling roomie.

Snake plants come in all shapes and sizes, so you and mix and match.
