#PlantTipTuesday: When Everyday is Caturday

If you live with feline friends but also want to have plants in your home, we’re here to help! While some cats won’t mess with your plants at all, many others love to nibble on plant leaves...which can be toxic to your pet.

We published a blog  here earlier this year that outlines a few plant varieties that are  safe around fur children of any kind, and this one speaks to plants specifically with cats in the home!

We’re now going to build on those recommendations and share a few more tips and tricks for #PlantTipTuesday

1.  Mount plants on the wall or ceiling, out of reach of your cats.

This might be our easiest tip of the bunch! If your cat likes to mess with your plants, purchase plants that thrive out of reach. May we suggest a hanging air planter? We know some cats are trapeze artists, but if your location is selected carefully, air plants should be a safe bet.

2. Get plants or trees that don’t have any leaves near the bottom to entice your kitty.

Cats are just so curious! If you have a kitty that likes to inspect every leaf, a bird of paradise or a fiddle leaf fig are beautiful options for your home. They each have leaves much harder to reach than the average houseplant.

3. Utilize an essential oil scent that your cat hates!

Many cats aren’t big fans of citrus. Place a citrus essential oil around the area where you keep your plants, or even on each individual pot. The scent should deter your cat from wanting to play with, eat, or otherwise destroy your plants...while also making the area smell nice! A win, win in our book.

4. Cut chicken wire and lay it flat on top of the soil.

Is your cat a digger? To protect your plant’s soil and prevent your felines from making a huge mess, chicken wire can become your greatest ally! You can also use some larger stones or gems to partially cover the soil.

5.  Keep your more delicate plants away from pets inside a terrarium!

Terrariums come in all shapes and sizes and are so fun to put together. It’s just a bonus that they’re pretty much pet-proof!
