Plant Placement: Where Plants Will Grow Best In Your Home
Houseplants are a great way to add life and color to your home. They can also improve air quality and reduce stress levels. But with so many different types of plants to choose from, it can be tough to know where to start. Picking the right plant for your home is probably the most important thing you can do when plant shopping. Remember to think about the type of lighting certain rooms get, what kind of plants are pet-friendly if you’re a pet owner, and the time you have to dedicate to the plants you bring home. Once all these factors have been considered you’ll be on your way to becoming a more responsible plant parent.
Not sure where to place your plants? Here are a few tips:
-Near a window. This one is a bit more obvious as plants need sunlight to survive, so it's important to place them near a good source of light. Be cautious with exact placement and what kind of plant you set near your window. Not all plants are made to withstand sunlight for long hours of the day.
-Out of direct sunlight. Some plants, like succulents, vining plants such as monstera and pothos can get sunburned if they're in direct sunlight for too long. If you have a plant that needs indirect sunlight, place it near a window that gets filtered light or under a table that sees a few hours of morning sun each day.
-Away from drafts. This one is a big one. Even the plants that claim to be hardy can be negatively affected by a draft in a room. It’s best to keep plants away from vents and drafts that could come by. Unless you wrap a shawl around your plant babies, keep the room where they are generally warm, but not too hot.
-In a spot where you'll see them. One of the best ways to keep your plants alive is to place them in a spot where you'll see them often. This will not only remind you to water them and give them the attention they need, but will give you the opportunity to see levels of growth and what type of care a plant might be needing at a certain time. This also helps pet owners keep an eye on the plant and pet at the same time, making sure fido doesn’t eat something he shouldn’t be eating.
More specifically you can place your plants:
On a windowsill. This is a great spot for plants that need a lot of sunlight. (think cacti)
On a bookshelf. This is a good option for plants that don't need as much sunlight.(philodendron and other types)
On a coffee table. This is a great way to add some life to your living room. (most of the palm trees I’ve ever owned have all started out on a coffee table)
In the kitchen. Not only will plants purify the air, but will give some visual interest to your kitchen.
In the bathroom. Believe it or not this is also a great spot for some plants. Some plants, like orchids, thrive in humid environments. Consider grouping your plants together in the bathroom a couple times a week to water or even letting your shower run for a little while so the plants can soak up all that steam.
No matter where you place your plants, make sure to give them the care they need. Water them regularly, fertilize them as needed, and prune them when necessary. With a little care, planning and effort your houseplants will thrive and add beauty to your home for years to come.
Here are some additional tips for choosing the right houseplants for your home:
-Consider the amount of sunlight your home gets. Some plants need a lot of sunlight, while others can tolerate low light conditions.
-Think about the size of your home and the space you have available for plants. Some plants can grow quite large, so make sure you have enough room for them.
-Choose plants that are easy to care for. Some plants are more difficult to care for than others, so choose ones that you're confident you can keep alive.
-Do some research on the different types of houseplants available. There are many different types of plants to choose from, so take some time to learn about the different options before you make a decision.
